Real Gun Safety Leadership!

While answering a few questions this week, President Obama informed participants that “our levels of gun violence are off the charts.” He claimed that it was incomprehensible that congress had not reacted to overwhelming public opinion and passed common sense gun safety legislation to expand gun background checks, adding that nations like Australia had long ago enacted reasonable common sense gun control safety laws to stop shootings:

“Couple of decades ago, Australia had a mass shooting, similar to Columbine or Newtown. And Australia just said, well, that’s it, we’re not doing, we’re not seeing that again, and basically imposed very severe, tough gun laws, and they haven’t had a mass shooting since.

Our levels of gun violence are off the charts. There’s no advanced, developed country that would put up with this.”

Our President is right. Most people know that gun homicides have now reached epidemic levels even though gun ownership is down.

It is reasonable and common sense to implement policies like longer wait times, banning Assault Weapons of Mass Destruction (though no one is talking about handgun bans), magazine size limits, gun-free zones, and background checks with safety registrations.

California and other states have already implemented those safety measures and though that did not stop Elliot Rodger from committing his rampage in Santa Barbara where 7 people were tragically killed by guns, it did definitively cause their number of gun deaths to plummet even though they are still at epidemic levels unseen in the states history.

In 1996, after the GUN massacre at Port Arthur, the Australian government passed common sense firearms regulations that banned ownership of almost all semiautomatic weapons of mass destruction, all self-loading rifles and shotguns of mass destruction, and instituted strict restrictions on all sales of ammunition of mass destruction for the guns. Australia also ran a gun safety buyback program and accepted 640,000 guns.

This ended gun crimes and gun deaths in Australia. Period.

President Obama is encouraging us to support implementing Australia’s reasonable common sense gun safety laws in the United States.

I applaud our Presidents leadership and encourage all guns safety groups who support the Second Amendment to have the courage to stand up to the NRA Tea Party Insurrectionists Extremist Gunophile Fetishists.

To do the same.

This time is different!

Like in Australia, NOT ONE MORE GUN DEATH!

In addition to some stats regarding gun violence, there is a percentage of those stats that are linked to Organized Crime, Gangs, etc.

If 100% of civilians were armed, it would not stop the Mob or Gangs from shooting each other.
Even if you took all guns away including from Organized Crime, they would still find a way to “hit” their target.
This argument can bear some weight when debating if gun owners reduce crime overall.
These Organized Crime shootings also add to the stats, as well as OC related incidents contribute to overall stats.

In some places like NYC, though gun related incidents were down overall, OC and Gang activity was on the increase.

Guns are currency to many in OC. They trade for drugs, other guns etc., and across State lines, which gives even more weight to a Federal policy.
